- ISA attends the annual United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26), as part of Colombia’s representation as a country with great climate ambition.
- In front of delegations from different countries, ISA will share the actions it has been implementing to address climate change, energy transition and decarbonization of the energy matrix of the country and the region.
- The Colombia Pavilion will be carbon neutral thanks to the offset that ISA will perform in alliance with Biofix. This offset will be registered in EcoRegistry, the pioneering platform in Latin America designed by one of the group’s companies for the Carbon Credits market.
As a demonstration of the commitments agreed in the ISA2030 Strategy for the creation of Sustainable Value, ISA will be present at the 26th version of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26), supporting the National Government’s mission to represent Colombia’s great climate ambition. At this event, which will take place in Glasgow, Scotland, the company will participate in the academic agenda that will allow it to present the actions and initiatives developed that demonstrate its leadership in climate change mitigation, in the carbon market and in the protection of biodiversity to different world leaders.
This year’s edition, which will take place from October 31 to November 12, seeks to engage participating countries in commitments such as the elimination of coal as an energy source, the reduction of greenhouse gases by 2030, zero net carbon emissions by 2050, and the protection of communities and natural habitats.
ISA, as part of the country’s “Colombia Carbono Neutral” (Colombia Carbon Neutral) initiative and the Carbon Neutral Electricity Sector Alliance, will be presenting the Comprehensive Climate Change Management Plan together with the Ministry of Mines and Energy, in line with the priorities designated to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In this regard, it will also present its commitment to achieving carbon neutrality. By the end of 2021, 100% of ISA’s energy companies will be net zero carbon, one year ahead of their carbon neutrality goal. The Company also expects to reduce 11 million tons of Co2 for the planet by 2030.
Likewise, and in line with its commitment to climate change, ISA will offset the Co2 emissions generated by the Colombia Pavilion. This offset will be registered in EcoRegistry, the carbon market platform based on blockchain technology developed by XM, an affiliate of ISA, which allows the issuance, transfer and retiring of carbon credits. This carbon footprint offsetting and registration is an action consistent with the discussions that will be conducted on the contribution of technological solutions for a more sustainable world.
“The participation in COP26 is a product of the efforts and commitment that, as a company, we have focused on the creation of Sustainable Value, being an opportunity to lead the transformation in facing climate change, decarbonization and the protection of biodiversity. In addition, we will have the opportunity to build alliances to strengthen our sustainability projects, ratifying the Articulation, one of the pillars of our strategy for strengthening capabilities”, said Bernardo Vargas Gibsone, ISA Group’s CEO.
This event, which takes place once a year, but due to the pandemic did not take place in 2020, will discuss issues related to the protection of communities and the conservation of natural habitats. ISA will be present regarding these matters with its sustainability program Conexión Jaguar, which together with its technical allies South Pole and Panthera, contributes to the conservation of biodiversity, climate change mitigation, the development of rural communities and the connectivity of the jaguar’s natural habitats in Latin America.
Participation in global initiatives and constant action in the fight against climate change are evidence of the company’s commitment to create Sustainable Value for the future of the planet and new generations, making decisions in the present to build the future we want.
ISA’s climate change strategy
ISA’s climate change mitigation strategy focuses on four fronts:
- Emissions reduction: through eco-efficiency and sustainable mobility.
- Contribution to the planet: through the Conexión Jaguar sustainability program, nearly 800.000 hectares of forest will be protected with a potential reduction of 6 million tons of CO2.
- Climate finance: ISA is a pioneer in financing instruments (green bonds) with an accumulated placement of USD 2,3 billion to finance infrastructure projects that connect renewable energy sources.
- Innovation: by using technological environmental assets developed through blockchain.
- EcoRegistry: registration and issuance of carbon credits with 23 million tons registered to date.
- Ecogox: registration and certification of renewable sources with 200 million kilowatts registered.
ISA will participate in the following points of the academic agenda
